Interfolding Pieces

Violeta Motta & Sylvain Monchocé

Interfolding pieces album cover

INTERFOLDING PIECES weaves soundscapes born of improvisation.

Conceived in 2025, the project draws inspiration from Monsieur de Lusse's The Art of the Transverse Flute (ca. 1720-ca. 1774) to summon distant echoes of the Baroque era—where multiphonics and diatonicity were already being introduced to the traverso. Here, the flute opens up to new forms of expression, driven by a delicate exploration that stretches its spectral possibilities and invents new gestures.

Each piece becomes a meeting point: between ancient instruments and contemporary voices, between forgotten techniques and contemporary inventions, between tenuous breath, distortion, and powerful bursts. We perceive the air as a polyphonic body folded to infinity. The sounds respond to each other in a shifting space: beating frequencies, grainy breath, shimmering timbres. The atmosphere floats, fragile, yet filled with an intimate power. Field recordings blend in, adding fragments of elsewhere, traces of the world. In this sonic setting, listening becomes restful and a slow metamorphosis full of surprises.
